Sailing off Fisherman Island

It’s always such a treat to find barnacle encrusted buoys washed up on shore or embedded in the craggy rocks on Squirrel Island. This pair are hanging from a tree overlooking the cove, creating the most perfect sculpture of reclaimed art.
Rosa Rugosa always makes me think of Squirrel. It’s abundant tangles line many of the walkways throughout the island. This bunch has a wonderful view of the cove.
This lone fir tree grows on the south shore of Squirrel Island, an island in the Gulf of Maine off of Boothbay Harbor. I pass this tree on my morning walk around the island and always think of it as keeping a lookout – gazing toward The Cuckolds Light in the distance. Cuckolds Light Station is a lighthouse located on the eastern pair of islets known as the “Cuckolds” just off the southern tip of Cape Newagen on Southport Island, the tip of which is also in view in the very very very far distance.
This was painted en plein air at Sugar Shack Farm in Erwinna, PA. This was my first (of hopefully many) outings with the wonderful group known as Peace Valley Plein Air Painters.
This painting was selected for the “Endless Summer” exhibition at Hick’s Art Center Gallery, on view July 24 – September 14, 2024.
